World Cup organizers in Qatar have admitted that nine workers employed on construction projects for the tournament died last year. “The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy” said that the workers died in incidents that were “non-work related”, which is a term used to describe fatalities that occur away from the worksite, primarily due to sudden cardiac or respiratory failure.
34 workers have died during stadium construction in the country since 2015 with 31 of those deaths classified as being “non-work related”. The latest figures were released in the Supreme Committee’s annual report about worker welfare. The organization said that it investigates each death to identify contributory factors and introduce preventative measures.
