Chasing Roger Federer

Novak Djokovic followed up his Wimbledon win with another victory at the US Open on Sunday. The 31-year-old Serb beat Argentinian Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3 7-6 6-3 in a match that wasn’t as one-sided as the scoreline suggests. Returning with back-to-back major titles after a two-year slump is an incredible achievement by Djokovic, who had struggled with motivation, private issues and a stubborn elbow injury after winning the French Open in the summer of 2016.

Djokovic’s third US Open title, his 14th major title overall, puts him level with Pete Sampras in terms of Grand Slam wins. Looking exclusively at active players, the Serb only has Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to catch. While the latter seems far away at 20 titles, everything seems possible for Novak Djokovic in current form. While Nadal has had to withdraw from his semi-final with a knee injury, Roger Federer crashed out early for the second consecutive Grand Slam tournament, feeding rumors that he might be human after all.
