Patriots Top List for Most Super Bowl Appearances

After losing in the AFC Conference Championship last year to the New England Patriots, the Kansas City Chiefs made the Super Bowl this year – the first time since 1970. The upcoming game on Feb 2 will be the Chiefs’ third Super Bowl appearance (and could be their second win). While this is not a lot compared to other teams, it is however not the worst performance in history. There are still four teams – the Cleveland Browns, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Detroit Lions and the Houston Texans – which have never played a Super Bowl, and 13 more teams which have competed only once or twice. Jacksonville and Houston only joined the competition in 1995 and 2002, respectively.

The Chiefs’ opponents, the San Francisco 49ers, will make this year’s their seventh participation. This makes them the team with the fifth most Super Bowl appearances. They are already tied for second most Super Bowl wins and could tie for most if they take this year’s trophy.

The New England Patriots are the team with most Super Bowl appearances, according to statistics published by ESPN, followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dallas Cowboys and the Denver Broncos. Yet, the Patriots are the among the teams with below average wins to participation ratios, with only six wins out of 11 Super Bowls played. The most unlucky team among the Super Bowl participants are the Minnesota Vikings. They played in the Super Bowl in 1970, 1974, 1975 and 1977 but failed to win any of those competitions.
